The Big Event Recap.

We did it! Nearly 13,000 Girl Scouts and their families, troop leaders and friends celebrated Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary at Cal Expo on April 28, 2012. And it was BIG!

All over the fairgrounds, Girl Scouts were busy having fun in seven themed “worlds” filled with interactive displays, hands-on activities, projects and entertainment by over 200 local exhibitors.

The event exemplified Girl Scouts’ three keys to leadership: discovering, connecting and taking action. Activities included science demos, wildlife tours, dance and drum performances, obstacle courses, speeches by girls, music showcases, art exhibits, petting zoos, craft projects, horse shows, rock-climbing walls & bounce houses, sing-alongs, a huge historical exhibit, and photo opportunities galore. Plus: live performances by special guests Coco Jones of Radio Disney, all-sister rock group Sledge Grits Band and Girl Scout folk singer Theresa.

We would like to thank all of those who attended this event, including the 200 volunteers, 100 staff members and all of the amazing event sponsors and exhibitors.

Happy 100th, Girl Scouts!

Event testimonials:

"On behalf of 350 Sacramento and the Cool California Challenge we want to thank Girl Scouts for inviting us to participate in such an exemplary event. The whole celebration was a treat--it was well-organized, positive and happy. All the girls and their parents/leaders were lovely--lots of smiles, thank-yous and positive interactions. It was a model of cooperation and good parenting. It was an honor to be part of the Girl Scout's 100th Anniversary celebration. May you go another 100 years. Many thanks."

"Thanks again for the invite to the celebration. I think the literally thousands of girls who stopped by the display, got their passports stamped, toured the tents and took the "dirty water challenge" enjoyed themselves and learned some important lessons on disasters and helping those less fortunate. Almost everyone walked away with brochures and dozens of your leaders signed up for our newsletter and asked for further presentations. It was wonderful exposure for ShelterBox and I hope you were pleased with our presentation."

-Jim Carriere, ShelterBox USA Board Member

"Just wanted to say thank you so much for including The Sledge Grits Band in your awesome event! You all did an amazing job making the band, and it's family and crew, feel comfortable. The staff was reliable, friendly, professional and all around awesome. We are so impressed with your organization of such a large event. Thank you again!!! We were proud to be part of the Girl Scouts 100 year Birthday in Sacramento!!"

"Yesterday was fabulous! The entertainment was great. Loved seeing our horses and new cowgirls. LOVED the song, I Want to Run Like a Girl. Wow, how inspiring! There was so much to do and see. I was thrilled to see so many girls participating in the science and engineering activities. Popsicle stick bridge construction, fun chemistry experiments, reptiles and more! My Mom attended with me, and must have taken a thousand photos. The VW bus painted with chalkboard paint was one of her favorite activities. What a cool idea! The best part for me was seeing all those girls and thinking about the women they will become - stronger, more confident, capable and engaged in life - because of their experience as a Girl Scout. I thought about the trajectory of my own life, and how my own experience as a Girl Scout changed my path forever, and how grateful I am for it.
Yesterday was a huge success. Congratulations!"

“Wow!  I was blown away at the amount of activities at the 100 celebration this past Saturday.  There were so many things for the girls to do and see.  I appreciated all of the eco friendly booths with information especially.  I always knew that our council was the best council ever but now that has been confirmed.  We loved every minute of it.”
