Camp Menzies Sneak Peek: Summer 2014

A camp experience like no other!

Join us for a fun-filled summer session at Camp Menzies, Girl Scouts Heart of Central California’s resident camp located in the Sierra Nevada. Create lifelong memories, try new activities, sing around the campfire and connect with nature—all while meeting new friends and becoming more independent. Choose from over 60 different camp programs, including: canoeing, swimming, archery (grade four and older), arts ‘n’ crafts, nature study, hiking, outdoor cooking, horseback riding and more. Come back in January for complete details and fees for all of our programs.

 

Travel Programs

Girl Scouts Heart of Central California offers several programs that allow girls to travel throughout the Sierra Nevada and beyond. Travel programs include a minimum of three days of travel and may not include time at Camp Menzies.

All About Animals

 

Entering Grades: 2-3
Session: 1 (5 days)

Check out what leaps, runs, slithers and soars around camp. Follow animal tracks, try out bird watching and examine the insects and amphibians in our meadow and canoe lake.

Artist's Retreat

 

Entering Grades: 8-12
Session: D (4 days)

Go on a relaxing, resort-like retreat to get in touch with your creative side. This program is dedicated to enhancing your drawing, painting and writing skills as you enjoy the beautiful Pacific coast and getting to hang out with new friends!

Arts Alive

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Session: 3 (8 days)

Grab your paintbrush, drawing pad, and journal and spend your time exploring and expressing your creative side.

Aqua Explorers

 

Entering Grades: 4-5
Session: 2 (5 days)

Take on a new water challenge each day as you swim, hike, canoe and kayak through the Sierras. Enjoy activities in camp as well as special field trips out of camp to explore the beautiful waterways of Calavaras County.

Beads, Jewels, and Rhinestones

 

Entering Grades: 4-5
Session: 2 (5 days)

Design your own bracelets, necklaces, and rings as you work towards earning the Jeweler badge. Take a trip to Murphys to visit a jewelry store. Create your own special beads, make a gemstone ring, and paint your own jewelry box.

Camera Shots

 

Entering Grades: 4-5
Session: 11 (5 days)

Earn the Digital Photography badge as you explore the wonderful world of Camp Menzies through the lens of a camera. Try different cameras, take pictures for the camp website, and create a photo frame for your favorite picture. Practice your nature photography on a special day trip to Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

Entering Grades: 4-5
Session: 10 (4 days)

Compete in our crazy camp Olympics featuring obstacle courses, archery, canoeing and orienteering. Work with your tent mates to earn ‘medals’ as you try camp activities with an Olympic theme.

Camp ‘n’ Canoe

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Session: 6 (8 days)

Practice canoe swamping, self-rescue, paddling techniques and more. Work on your canoe skills in camp before heading out for an extended camping trip on the beautiful Union & Utica Reservoirs.

Session: 4, 7 & 13 (4 days)

Design the perfect in-camp program with your unit. Choose from swimming, canoeing, arts ‘n’ crafts, nature study, archery, and more. Plan a day trip to a fun location in Calaveras County.

Session: 1 (5 days)

Become writer, director, actor and illustrater as you work to create your own visual story through comic art. Earn the Comic Artist badge as you develop your own special comic from start to finish.

Do you love a challenge? Rock climb, slide down a zipline, white water raft, canoe, spelunk, and hike. Every day is a new exciting adventure.

Dance the days away—the spotlight is on you! Share your moves with your new friends, have a dance party, and put on a dance show for the whole camp.

Discover your impact on our ever changing environment, connect with other girls who are passionate about nature and find out ways to take action to shrink your ecological footprint.

Eco-Fashionistas

 

Entering Grades: 7-12
Session: 5 (5 days)

Have an eye for fashion? Interested in re-cycling old clothes? In this program, you will learn basics of fashion design and textile art which you will use to re-design and re-purpose clothes you salvage from local thrift stores. Prepare your masterpiece and then model it at the All-Camp fashion show!

Engineers

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Session: 1 (5 days)

Build a rubber band catapult, try to keep your egg from cracking during an egg drop, and particpate in the first ever Camp Menzies model bridge building competition. Each day you will be faced with a new engineering challenge.

Dig in and find out more about where your food comes from by planting, growing and cooking food all fresh from the garden of Camp Menzies!

Geoventures

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Session: 6 (8 days)

Make rock candy, fossil jewelry, and ice cream using rock salt. Learn more about rocks, minerals and fossils as you spelunk, climb and swim throughout the Sierra Nevada.

Get the Scoop!

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Session: 11 (5 days)

Take a week-long course in journalism, then design and publish the 2014 Camp Menzies newspaper. Conduct interviews, write articles, shoot photos, create comics and capture the highlights of camp life.

Girl Vs. Wild

 

Entering Grades: 4-5
Session: 11 (5 days)

Come to camp and get closer to nature; build shelter and spend a night sleeping out. Learn how to pitch a tent, use a compass and to build the perfect fire as you complete the Camper badge. Cook out, camp out, and get out!

Explore different languages and cultures with the help of our international staff. Help cook an international meal, play games and learn crafts from around the world.

Horse Lovers

 

Entering Grades: 4-6
Sessions: 1, 2 & 5 (5 days)
Sessions: 4, 7 & 10 (4 days)

Develop your horsewomanship skills at this beginning level riding program. Participate in three hours of horseback riding as well as ground lessons on horse safety and horse care. When you’re not riding, try out some of the other activities that camp has to offer. Campers will spend time with the horses each day but may not ride every day.

Calling all soccer players! Come improve your game at this exciting new program. Work with college athletes to perfect your soccer techniques during daily clinics.

LiA (Leader-in-Action)

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Session: 5 (5 days)
Session: 10 (4 days)

Work on your Leader-in-Action (LiA) Award by spending the week working with younger girls in a hands-on training experience you'll never forget! In your free time take a dip in the lake, shoot a round of archery or visit the nature hut.

Ready to take the lead and help younger campers? Spend half of your time exploring camp and enhancing your leadership skills, and half your time supporting and helping teach games, crafts and songs to younger campers.

Leave your mark on Camp Menzies as you work with your unit to design and paint a new welcome mural for Camp Menzies.

Fun and fantasy await you at magical Camp Menzies. Design your own games, sing songs and act out your own stories as you earn the Making Games badge.

Menzies Mountain Riders

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Session: 2 & 5 (5 days)

Improve your horsewomanship skills at this intermediate riding program. Work on timing, rhythm, and balance during four hours of horseback riding sessions and participate in ground sessions on the care and feeding of horses. When you’re not riding, try out all the other activities camp has to offer. Campers will spend time with the horses each day, but may not ride every day.
Prerequisite: Must have attended Horse Lovers, participated in two Passport to Ride lessons or have 10 hours of riding experience prior to camp.

Session: 3 (8 days)

Become a writer, director, cinematographer or actress as you work together with your unit to produce your own digital movie.

Menzies Master Chefs

 

Entering Grades: 6-8
Sessions: 3 & 12 (8 days)

Become a master chef as you try gourmet cooking in the kitchen and the out-of-doors throughout this tasty session. Compete in a cooking competition, visit a local restaurant to tour the kitchen, and plan a special dessert for the entire camp.

Use your powers of deduction and forensic science to solve a camp mystery. Plan a blindfold mystery meal and take a mystery hike. Experience all that camp has to offer with a mysterious twist as you earn the Detective badge.

Entering Grades: 7-12
Session: 12 (8 days)

How many people does it take to sink a canoe? Can an arrow pierce ice? Explore these questions and more as you design and carry out your own experiments to explore what is fact and fiction. Plan an overnight out of camp, and try out the other activities camp has to offer between experiments.

Become a wildlife biologist, botanist, geologist, entomologist and meteorologist all in one week. Design your own experiments and create your own journal to keep track of your observations and findings throughout the week.

No school means lazy days of hanging out with friends, sleeping in, and staying up for those late night chats and snacks. Enjoy an evening canoe paddle, tell stories and roast marshmallows over the campfire.

Can one person make a difference? Girl Scouts can! Build a great camp community using teamwork. Face team challenges, make new friends, and spend time at camp doing everything you love as you work on parts of the Agent of Change Journey and discover the “Power of Team”.

Trot 'n' Trek

 

Entering Grades: 7-9
Session: 12 (8 days)

Improve your horsewomanship skills at this advanced riding program. Work on timing, rhythm, and balance during six hours of horseback riding sessions, participate in ground sessions on the care and feeding of horses, and enjoy an extended ride and overnight camping out of camp. Campers will spend time with the horses each day but may not ride every day. Prerequisite: Must have attended Menzies Mountain Riders or Trot ‘n’ Trek, or have 14 hours of riding experience prior to camp.

Two of Us

 

Entering Grades: 2-12
Sessions: 8 & 14 (4 days)

Join us for a fun-filled 4 days designed to give you a taste of camp life and the outdoors with a special adult there to experience it all with you. Campers entering sixth grade and older have the option of participating in our traditional Two of Us session or trying our advanced session geared for older girls and returning campers.

Under Construction

 

Entering Grades: 7-12
Session: 9 (9 days)

Be part of a special construction crew of girls ages 13-18 with members of the Sacramento Chapter of NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) and other volunteers from the construction industry. Swing hammers, pound nails and learn how to use power tools as you build a new structure at Camp Menzies.

Get ready to navigate around the urban jungle as you use public transportation to see the sites of San Francisco. Travel by train to “The City” and spend the week in a youth hostel, as you visit museums, beaches and much more.

Venture from the Central Valley to the sea! Really dive in as you travel to Santa Cruz to learn about oceanography and marine biology while also getting time to explore the beach town and take dips in the waves.

Travel around the world in five days! Learn about other cultures from our international staff. Cook an international meal, play games from other countries and learn a new language as you work on parts of the A World of Girls Journey.

Explore the camp waterways, create a rainbow, make watermelon coolers, and design a special mural for the camp as you become an advocate for water conservation.

Yosemite Camp of Service

 

Entering Grades: 6-12
Dates: June 9, 2013 to June 13, 2013 (5 days)

Spend five days in Yosemite National Park completing the “Resource Stewardship Girl Scout Ranger Program.” Explore this beautiful park, learning how to protect its natural and cultural resources while engaging in educational and volunteer service projects.
