Girls may choose to participate in activities for which a first aider may be necessary. Girl Scouts of the USA has established two levels of first aid. Level 1 is a basic level appropriate for most troop activities. Level 2 is an advanced training class for high-adventure activities, international travel, places where emergency care is more than 30 minutes away, and certain large events including camping events with 200 or more participants.
A Level 1 or Level 2 first aider is a person, 18 years or older, who has received training in first aid and CPR. The following health care providers may also serve as first-aiders at Level 1 or Level 2: physician, physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, licensed practical/vocational nurse, paramedic, military medic, emergency medical technician, dentist or chiropractor. If that person is comfortable with his/her emergency medicine skills and the licensing/certification is current, then no additional training is required.
You are not required to take first aid and CPR from our council to be a Girl Scout first aider. First aid and CPR classes may be offered by recreation and park districts, school district adult education programs, fire departments, medical facilities, or local American Red Cross chapters. Please see the list below to be sure the agency is a GSUSA Authorized Provider. Check in your community to learn if a class is offered. Online courses for First Aid and CPR are not accepted by our council.
Level 1-First Aid & CPR
This basic level is for the adult acting as the first aider for most troop activities (see Safety Activity Checkpoints) and is valid for two years through Medic First Aid. The training class offered by Girl Scouts Heart of Central California is Medic First Aid, International, Inc., Pediatric Medic First Aid® with Infant, Child and Adult CPR. Adults who need to re-certify a CPR certificate from any agency other than Medic First Aid® may also enroll in any of these Level 1 training courses. Online courses for First Aid and CPR are not accepted by our council.
Our training classes for First Aid and CPR do not meet the requirements of the California Emergency Medical Services for the Child Care Provider license in the state of California and are not intended to do so. To seek providers you can go to the EMSA Web site www.emsa.ca.gov and check their listings.

Level 1-Retraining
Medic First Aid, International, Inc. has changed the content of our Girl Scout Level 1 First Aid and CPR training class to reflect recent changes made by the American Heart Association. New booklets and videos have been produced to align the course with current first aid and CPR protocols. Because the course contains new information, everyone taking the class in 2012 and 2013 will need to take a full class rather than a re-train session.
Level 2-First Aid & CPR
A Level 2 first aider is required for international travel, any resident camp, and any camp activity with more than 200 participants. Safety Activity Checkpoints specifies when a Level 2 first aider is needed for a specific activity. If emergency response is more than 30 minutes away, a Level 2 First Aider is required. In order to be a Level 2 first aider, you must have current CPR certification. A currently certified physician, dentist, registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, licensed practical/vocational nurse, dentist, chiropractor, paramedic, emergency medical technician or military medic would qualify as a Girl Scout Level 2 first aider.
Wilderness First Aid
Current CPR certification is a prerequisite for this class and you must bring your current CPR certificate to this class.
Combined with current CPR certification, which must be taken separately, this class provides Girl Scout Level 2 First Aid certification. Check Safety Activity Checkpoints for information on activities that require a GS Level 2 First Aider. Wilderness First Aid focuses on practicing first aid skills in a wilderness setting and includes patient assessment, shock and bleeding, head and spinal injuries, wounds, burns, musculoskeletal injuries, and heat and cold injuries. This 16-hour class is a must for all going on international travel, backpackers, and high adventure enthusiasts! Limited financial assistance is available for adults. Currently scheduled courses will provide American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid certification.
